After being diagnosed with celiac disease, I did extensive research on what’s gluten-free at Starbucks. The information I found was often contradictory and confusing, so I've compiled a list of my favorite gluten-free drinks and some things to avoid. While I typically stick to black coffee or green tea for safety, it's fun to try new drinks—there are more options than just black coffee!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Starbucks informed me that there is always a chance of cross-contamination as they are not a dedicated gluten-free facility. Here is their response:
Unfortunately, we do not carry any certified gluten-free products outside of some packaged snack foods. The products that have received gluten-free certification will be marked clearly on the packaging. Throughout our stores, we openly handle gluten-containing ingredients and other allergens. While we take precautions to keep ingredients separate, we cannot guarantee that any of our beverages and foods are allergen-free as we use shared equipment to store, prepare, and serve them.
Before ordering, be mindful of the possibility of cross-contamination. If you inform your barista that you have celiac, they should do their best to avoid cross contamination, but nothing is guaranteed. I've included some of my favorite gluten-free drinks and some things to avoid. This list is not exhaustive, so always do your own research or consult your barista before trying something new. The safest options are drinks made in the cup vs. a shaker or a blender (which you can request!), and food items that are packaged and certified gluten free.
1. Iced Blonde Americano
If you haven’t tried Starbucks' blonde roast, it's a must. Smoother than their regular espresso roast, the blonde roast needs less milk/cream/sugar. Iced blonde americano is my go-to during the week for a low-calorie caffeine fix. This drink is generally safe as it involves only water, ice, and espresso shots, minimizing cross-contamination risks. This is also the
espresso I make at home,
in my Nespresso. A favorite all around!
2. Unsweetened Green Iced Tea
My original Starbucks order! It's cold, refreshing, and has less caffeine than coffee. I prefer it unsweetened to avoid added sugar.
3. Iced Blonde Latte with Soy Milk
Similar to the blonde americano but in latte form. The
blonde roast is naturally sweet, eliminating the need for added sweeteners. I opt for soy milk to avoid dairy.
4. Strawberry Acai Refresher
A treat for me since it’s sweet and filled with sugar. The refreshers, including the strawberry acai, are gluten-free.
5. Unsweetened Iced Coffee (with Almond Milk and One Pump of Hazelnut)
I rarely order this, but it’s good when I do. While Starbucks' hazelnut syrup has sugar, it's gluten-free. I prefer almond milk for its flavor.
6. Cold Brew with Cold Foam
Starbucks' cold foam is gluten-free and delicious, offering something sweet but relatively light. Clean blender for the cold foam!
7. Peach Iced Tea
One of our favorites. So good!
8. Pink Drink
A favorite for many—a strawberry refresher with coconut milk.
9. Plain Black Coffee or Americano
Simple but reliable. You can never go wrong with these!
This list is not exhaustive, and subject to change at any time.
Frappuccinos
Some are gluten-free, but they're blended in the same equipment used for gluten-containing (java chips, cookies and cream, etc.) ingredients. If you have celiac and choose to order a frappuccino, ensure the blender is sanitized before use.

I choose to only purchase packaged food items that are certified gluten-free.
Add a spoonful of brown sugar or coconut sugar to a mug, and brew a double shot of Blonde espresso over the sugar with your Nespresso or other espresso machine. Stir well to dissolve the sugar. Fill a clean cup with ice, and pour desired amount of milk. Top with brown sugar espresso, stir, and enjoy!
